OsADL1 encodes a plant-specific calpain-like cysteine proteinase orthologous to maize DEFECTIVE KERNEL1. Null mutant of OsADL1 results in the absence of aleurone layers on the ventral side, but aleurone layers on the dorsal side are normal, which shows OsADL1 plays an important role in pattern formation specialized aleurone layer of the endosperm during seed development (Hibara et al., 2009; Zhou et al., 2013).
