IRT1 is a major player in Fe homeostasis. Polar localization of IRT1 was observed between the outer polar domain of plasma membrane and endosome/trans-golgi network in root epidermal cells (Barberon et al., 2014). IRt1 takes up iron from soil upon iron deficiency. IRT1 has a broad range of substrates among divalent metals including Mn, Zn and Cobalt.
