Os03g0156000 encodes OsEXPA19 expansin protein localized in the extracellular matrix. Expansins are known as acid-induced cell wall loosening enzymes (PMID: 37073485). The OsEXPA19's barley ortholog HORVU5Hr1G119680, shows lower expression in the barley egt2 mutant?s root elongation zone when compared to wild-type plant (Kirschner et al., 2021; PMID: 34446550). Thus, it is upregulated by the EGT2. it has been proposed that in the native plant cell wall, expansins bind to the interface between microfibrils and coating polysaccharides and facilitate wall expansion by catalyzing the disruption of hydrogen bonds between the two, thereby facilitating turgor-driven slippage between microfibrils and other components of the wall (PMID: 11536663). The function of this rice gene is infered based on gene orthology.
