| text | NAC proteins are plant-specific, transcription factors that are expressed in various developmental stages and tissues of the plant. Various NAC proteins such as, SNAC1 and OsNAC6 (Hu et al., 2006, 2008) are reported to increase drought and salt tolerance in rice plants. OsNAC5/ ONAC009/ ONAC071, a homolog of OsNAC6, is induced by abiotic stresses such as drought, high salinity and ABA (Takasaki et al., 2010). Transcription activation activity of OsNAC5, strengthens its position as an important player in stress tolerance. It is reported to enhance stress tolerance by upregulating the expression of stress-inducible rice genes, without affecting the growth patterns of transgenic rice plants. Microarray analysis of these stress-inducible genes depicts that most upregulated genes in the UBIpro::OsNAC5 transgenic plants are responsive to drought and high salinity (Takasaki et al., 2010). |
