text The transcription of SNAC1 is upregulated by SERF1 transcription factor in response to salinity (Schmidt et al., 2013). SNAC1 is an ABA-dependent transcription factor upregulated in response to drought, high salinity, low temperature, and ABA. It shows a strong and localized expression in guard cells in response to drought. SNAC1-overexpressing transgenic plants show drought and salinity tolerance under field conditions (Hu et al., 2006). This observed tolerance is associated with increased stomatal closure and ABA sensitivity in SNAC1 transgenic plants. But, SNAC1-overexpressing transgenic plants do not exhibit a change in root architecture. Thus, drought tolerance mediated by SNAC1 involves preventing water loss by enhancing stomatal closure.
