text alanine biosynthesis III
Cysteine desulfurase a pyridoxal phosphate?dependent enzyme catalyzes the removal of S from L-cysteine and drives this route of alanine biosynthesis. The resulting elemental sulfur is essential in assembly of Fe-S clusters/cofactors. During the reaction the sulfane S (S0) is bound to the active site of the enzyme as a persulfide (R-S-S0H) and is transferred in this form to the accepting scaffold protein.
In rice there are two cysteine desulfurases predicted by orthology to Arabidopsis thaliana in mitochondria and plastids
