text For rice growing in anaerobic water logged conditions ammonium is the preferred source of inorganic nitrogen, and the ammonium is assimilated by the coupled reactions of glutamine synthetase (GS) and the glutamate synthase (GOAT). In rice, there are two NADH-dependent GOGATs and one ferredoxin (Fd)-dependent GOGAT, NADH-GOGAT1 is reported to be important for primary NH4 assimilation in seedlings and in increasing tillering, whereas NADH-GOGAT2 is reported to be significant in remobilization of Nitrogen in senescing rice leaves. On the other hand the Fd-GOGAT is important for re-assimilation of phosphorespiratorily derived ammonium ions in the chloroplasts. This pathway depict the Glutamate biosynthesis catalyzed by the Ferredoxin-dependent GOGAT.
