text L-glutamate and L- glutamine act as precursors for arginine biosynthesis. L-glutamate and L-glutamine are converted to L-ornithine and carbamoyl-phosphate respectively, which come together to form L-citruline which is converted L-arginine via L-argino-succinate. In the final step argininosuccinate lyase (OsASL1) cleaves L-argininosuccinate to arginine and fumarate and OsASl1 is experimentally verified to catalize this final step. This pathway is localized in the plastids. An alternate transcript OsASL2 is reported to be localized to the cytosol.
