OsFRDL4 functions as a Al-induced citrate transporter, which secretes citrate from the roots to chelate Al outside. OsFRDL4 might be required only for the external Al detoxification and plays no role in the absence of Al and positively regulated by ART1 (Yokosho et al., 2011).
