OsSRL2 encodes a novel plant-specific protein that functions in regulating rice leaf rolling. Loss of function mutant of SRL2 shows abnormal formation of sclerenchymatous cells on the abaxial side of the leaf, resulting in inwardly rolled leaves. OsSRL2 might be involved in the transdifferentiation process from mesophyll cells to sclerenchymatous cells, revealing a possible mechanism underlying leaf rolling in rice. In SRL2 mutant, significant reduced expression of YAB4 (5-fold) and YAB5 (27-fold) was observed (Liu et al., 2016).
