In rice, the crown root primordium originates
from the innermost ground meristem cells adjacent to
the peripheral cylinder of vascular bundles in the stem
(Itoh et al. 2005). ARL1/CRL1, encoding a LOB-domain transcription factor, is a specific regulator of crown roots (Inukai et al. 2005).
