Summation

Threonine serves as precursor for isoleucine biosynthesis, hence deaminated by plastid localized dehydratases to produce 2-oxobutyrate which further converts into isoleucine. This reaction can be viewed in isoleucine biosynthesis pathway. Threonine aldolase catalyzes the reversible conversion of threonine to glycine plus acetaldehyde (Joshi et al., 2006). The alternative reaction, deamination of threonine to 2-oxobutyrate is catalyzed by threonine dehydrogenase. This enzyme has not been identified yet in plants.
